Quest for Glory Anthology CD README File Thank you for purchasing the QG Anthology. Let's get you installed and playing! TABLE OF CONTENTS - Installation Instructions - General Questions - Running MS-DOS games in Windows - General Questions - Game Specific Questions - Sound Card Configurations and Sound Issues - Troubleshooting Help - Copyright Information INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS We've set up menus to allow you to choose which games you want to install to your hard drive. All games have been pre-setup to use a mouse and a Soundblaster-compatible sound card. For MS-DOS installation: Note: If your CD letter is E:, type E: instead. Type D: and press the ENTER key. Type INSTALL and press the ENTER key. Note: Don't type D:\INSTALL and press ENTER. For Windows installation: Note: If your CD letter is E:, type E: instead. - In Program Manager, click on FILE, then click on RUN. Type D:\SETUP and click OK. - In Windows 95, click START, then click on RUN. Type D:\SETUP and click OK. Note: QG1, QG2, and QG3 were designed as MS-DOS games. Some customers may have problems running MS-DOS games from Windows. If this is the case, please refer the to section "RUNNING MS-DOS GAMES IN WINDOWS" in this README file. GENERAL QUESTIONS Question: Do you need the QG Anthology CD in the drive all the time? Answer: Not for QG1, QG2, QG3, and QG4 non-voice versions, since these are installed to your hard drive. You will need the QG Anthology CD in the drive for any version of the voice version of QG4. Question: Do you have to install the games to your hard drive? Answer: No, but we set up the games to install to your hard drive anyway. The games only require a few megabytes of hard drive space. Most of the QG games have never been programmed to run directly from CD-ROM, and have not been fully tested this way. For Your Information: If you ran the game from the CD-ROM, the default saved game directory would try to save to the CD-ROM drive and display an error message "Your save game directory is full". If you ran the games from the CD-ROM, and you have a Roland MT-32 or PAS-16, you couldn't pick these sound devices. To keep things simple for everyone, the games run from the hard drive, as they were designed. Question: You've been saving only one saved game as you play, and now you need to go back to an earlier point in the game, or someone erased your only saved game. What do you do? Answer: There's nothing you can do. Each QG game allows you to make lots of saved games in lots of different places. Restart the game from the beginning. If you save a game as "Jester's Game", then want to save again after defeating the Muckle Monster, save a new game called "Defeated the Muckle Monster". More Information: Before you restart from scratch, there's something you may want to try first. We've included saved games created on this QGA CD when we tested the QG Anthology to assist Technical Support with troubleshooting problems. Try to restore the saved games found in the \SAVES directory on the QG Anthology CD. There is no guarantee that these will work properly on your computer, but it won't hurt to try. Question: You've been saving lots of saved games, and have run out of room to save more games. You don't want to delete or overwrite the saved games you currently made, or another person wants to play from scratch and make their own saved games. What can you do? Answer: Each directory can hold 20 Sierra saved games. If you change the saved game directory to another location, you'll be able to save 20 more saved games. Example: Mom wants to play QG2. Before she starts the game, at the MS-DOS prompt, type the following: C: CD\SIERRA\QGANTH\QG2 MD MOM CD MOM MD 1 MD 2 MD 3 This will create a C:\SIERRA\QGANTH\QG2\MOM directory with three subdirectories 1, 2, and 3. This will let Mom save 60 saved game positions. Now let's say Dad wants to join in the fun. Type the following: C: CD\SIERRA\QGANTH\QG2 MD DAD This will create a C:\SIERRA\QGANTH\QG2\DAD directory that will let Dad change his saved game directory from C:\SIERRA\ QGANTH\QG2 to C:\SIERRA\QGANTH\QG2\DAD to save his games separate from Mom's saved games. Question: You have a Roland MT-32 or similar device. How do you enable it for music in the games? Answer: First make sure you installed the game to your hard drive. Once the game is installed to your hard drive, do the following: Go to the game directory on your hard drive by typing the following commands. In this example, you are trying to change the music for Roland MT-32 for Quest for Glory 3 English version: CD C:\SIERRA\QGANTH\QG3E INSTALL Use the arrow keys to highlight MUSIC, and press the ENTER key. Select Roland MT-32, press ENTER, then highlight "ACCEPT THESE CHOICES" and press ENTER. Now you'll have MT-32 music support in the game. Problem: The game says you need more memory to run the game, but you have 8 meg of memory installed in your computer. Why? For Your Information: Most of the QG games are MS-DOS based. They use MS-DOS type memory called "conventional" or "base" memory. This is the first 640K of memory installed in your computer. if this memory is being used by something else, like software drivers for a mouse, a CD-ROM drive, a sound card, a scanner, or Windows, there may not be enough free memory to run the game. QG1 old and QG2 require 512k (out of 640k) of available conventional memory. QG1 new and QG3 require 580k (out of 640k) of available memory. QG4 MS-DOS version uses a DOS extender which may run fine as long as there's plenty of extended memory free (but on some computers it may require 540k of base memory anyway). QG4 Windows version uses the Windows memory manager, so as long as Windows has enough memory and a swap file, it should run fine. Solution: The fastest way to run the game is to make and use a bootable floppy disk. Look under the "Out of Hunk" question in this README for more information to make a boot disk. Problem: You have a Pro Audio Spectrum sound card. The QG games randomly lock up or won't start. Solution: First make sure you installed the game to your hard drive. Once the game is installed to your hard drive, do the following: Go to the game directory on your hard drive by typing the following commands. In this example, you are changing sound card choices for Quest for Glory 3 English version: CD C:\SIERRA\QGANTH\QG3E INSTALL Use the arrow keys to highlight the MUSIC choice, and press the ENTER key. Select Pro Audio Spectrum and press ENTER. Do the same for AUDIO (if it's a menu choice), then highlight "ACCEPT THESE CHOICES" and press ENTER. Question: Why is there no speech in some of the QG games? Answer: The only QG game with speech is Quest for Glory 4 CD-ROM voice version. QG1, QG2, QG3, and QG4 floppy version were never designed for speech. Question: You log onto the Sierra BBS or an on-line service like Compuserve or America On-line and notice patches for the QG games. Do you need to download and use these patches? Answer: No. All the current patches for the QG games are already installed on the CD-ROM. The only patches you would need is if the patch name or description said it was required for the QG Anthology. Hopefully this Anthology won't need a patch :) Problem: After running INSTALL inside a game directory on the hard drive, a row of dots runs across the screen, then stops and locks up. Solution: Type INSTALL -m and press ENTER. If this doesn't work, try typing INSTALL -f. Please make sure the m or f are in lowercase. Problem: "Can't create output file" or "Not enough space" during installation. Solution: You need to free up more hard drive space before instal- ling the game. Problem: We said "all games have been pre-setup to use a mouse..." but your mouse doesn't work in QG1, 2, 3, or the DOS version of QG4. You see "No mouse driver was found in MS-DOS" error message starting the games. Solution: This means your MS-DOS mouse program was not run before the game started. Follow the instructions in the README to make a boot disk. This will automatically find and use your mouse driver for you. More Information: The games are set up to use a mouse if a DOS-based mouse driver is loaded. The confusing part is Windows will use a mouse anyway, since has its own mouse driver that MS-DOS can't see or use. MS-DOS needs a mouse program to be run before it can use the mouse. To see if a mouse program is hidden on your hard drive, type "DIR \MOUSE /S /P". Let's say you see: Directory of C:\MSMOUSE MOUSE COM Directory of C:\WINDOWS MOUSE DRV MOUSE INI A mouse program will end in ".COM" or ".EXE", so the mouse drivers in C:\WINDOWS in this example won't do. To run the mouse driver in MSMOUSE in this example, type "C:\MSMOUSE\MOUSE.COM". You should see a message saying your mouse is now enabled. You can now play the games. Problem: You pick up something in QG3 or QG4, but it doesn't appear in your inventory. Solution: If you have more than 18 items, you need to scroll or page down in inventory to see the extra objects. Question: You keep climbing trees or throwing rocks, but your character sheet stats always stay at "0" for CLIMBING and THROWING. Why? Answer: If you have "0" skill in something, you'll NEVER improve in that skill, not matter how hard you practice. Your character is given a chance to acquire new skills before the game starts. If you didn't assign any points to Climbing or Throwing, then your hero won't be able to climb or throw for the entire game. More Information: You won't be able to acquire all the skills with the limited "pool" of points at the beginning of each game. Pick and choose wisely, because it will affect how you complete the games. Problem: "This game was saved under a different interpreter" when restoring a saved game. Solution #1: If you have saved games from the floppy version of the QG games, you may have problems using them with the QG Anthology games. This is because the QG Anthology games have all the patches and updates installed. Your saved games may have been created with the unpatched versions of QG and are therefore incompatible. Solution #2: If you copied the {gamename}.CAT or {gamename}.DIR file from a friend or another computer but didn't copy the {gamename}.000, .001, .002, etc. files, you'll get this error message. Make sure you have all the saved game files before trying to restore. Problem: Running the games in Windows, the colors on the Sierra logo at the start of the game look weird, or when you Task Switch back and forth, the colors in the games are messed up. Solution: You'll notice that the game itself will run fine. The colors on the Sierra logo use "palette cycling". This allows us to make colors sweep across the Sierra logo. If you're running in Windows, the video hardware may not handle to color animation properly. As for the colors not restoring when you Task Switch, there is no solution to this. The games' colors are set up when the game starts. When you Task Switch out of and back to the game, the game's palette is not restored. Don't Task Switch in the middle of the game. If you quit, then restart the game, the colors will be back to normal. Problem: "Out of Hunk" error message Solution: If your computer is close to the minimum "free memory" to run this game, you may experience slowdowns in some areas or receive the error message "Out of Hunk". If this occurs, try running the game from a boot disk. To check free memory, type "chkdsk" from MS-DOS. If the "bytes free" number reported is less than 583,000, you may need to use a boot disk. Create a Boot Disk: Sierra has included a boot disk maker with the QG Anthology CD. You can access the boot disk maker from the MS-DOS prompt. If your CD-ROM drive is D:, type one of the following commands in lowercase letters: bootdisk and press ENTER (for QG1, QG2, and QG3) bootdisk -p and press ENTER (for QG4 non-voice versions) bootdisk -c -p and press ENTER (for QG4 voice DOS version) bootdisk -c -w and press ENTER (for QG4 voice WIN version) If you want to see all the bootdisk options, type bootdisk /? and press ENTER. For Win95: View the file "BDWIN95.TXT" located on the QG Anthology CD for more information. Question: Why don't the games' volume control work for PC Internal Speaker? Answer: The PC Internal speaker has two options: Loud and Off. The games' volume control is for sound card control, such as the Sound Blaster and Roland MT-32. Note: For MS-DOS games, check if your SET BLASTER environment variable is enabled and at the correct setting. To check this, at the C: prompt, type SET and press . You should see a line that says BLASTER = A220 I7 D1 (or something similar). If you do not see such a line and your sound card is on Address 220, IRQ 10, and DMA 1, at the C: prompt, type SET BLASTER = A220 I10 D1 and press . This line tells MS-DOS how to access your sound card and may prevent lockups. For Your Information: The Quest for Glory Anthology contains a list of BBS and Tech Support Numbers for Sound Card, Video Card, and Miscellaneous Computer Peripheral / Software Manufacturers. To view this file in Windows, run SETUP.EXE, select SUPPORT, click on CONTENTS, then select CONTACT INFORMATION. To view this file in MS-DOS, type EDIT D:\CONTACT.TXT and press ENTER (if your CD-ROM drive is D:). RUNNING MS-DOS GAMES IN WINDOWS Many customers want to run our MS-DOS based games in Windows. Some have no problems doing this. Others have lots of problems doing this. Here is a list of common questions and answers we have been asked before: - Are there Windows-specific versions of QG1, 2, and 3 ? No. - What kind of problems might happen? Windows and MS-DOS might fight over sharing the sound card and memory, preventing the games from running, or making the games run very slowly. - Why can others run the MS-DOS games fine under Windows? Each computer is set up differently. One type of sound card might share tasks differ- ently than another. - What can we tell you to make the MS-DOS games run better in Windows? First, don't make huge changes to your system. It's working fine now, and that's the way we want to leave it. For insufficient memory problems: If you are using Windows 95, you can configure each game's icon to set up the computer's memory. If you are using Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups, you can make a boot disk to boot Windows with more available memory. For hardware sharing problems: You could go to the hard drive directory where the game is installed, rerun INSTALL inside that directory and try ADLIB or IBM PC INTERNAL SPEAKER to try to avoid sound card conflicts. If you have Windows 95, you can reboot to MS-DOS mode to avoid conflicts. GAME SPECIFIC QUESTIONS Quest For Glory 1: So You Want To Be A Hero Problem: You get an "Oops Error" message asking about the "Dag-Nab-It" game in the Thieves' Guild in the original (16 color) version of the game. Solution: Don't ask about the rules of the game. The rules are easy: Try for a bull's eye and the highest score wins. Problem: Your hero is unable to get past the Brigands' dining room in the 256 color version. Solution: You must free up more conventional memory. At least 580K of free memory is needed to get past this part of the game in the 256 color version. Rerun INSTALL from the \SIERRA\QGANTH\GQ1NEW directory on your hard drive and choose MAKE A BOOTABLE FLOPPY DISK. Follow the instructions to make a boot disk to free up more conventional memory. Quest For Glory 2: Trial By Fire Problem: You keep reading the message "You must lure the Fire Elemental further into the alley" when fighting the fire elemental. Solution: You must buy only one bag of incense. If you buy more than one bag, drop all but one bag before luring the fire elemental into the alleyway. Then, after luring the fire elemental into the alleyway, type USE INCENSE, then DROP LAMP, then USE WATER. Problem: The afternoon hours just drag on and on while you wait for night to fall. Solution: Adjust the time scale in QG2 to the fastest setting. Question: What are "Silly Clowns" ? Answer: Random funny stuff that won't affect gameplay. Quest For Glory 3: Wages Of War Problem: Your hero can't find the blue orchid. Solution: Go to the tree and ask the Guardian about "wood". After this, the blue orchid will randomly appear in the jungle. Problem: Magic users can't levitate during the Shaman duel, and fall into the pit. Solution: Turn the DETAIL and SKILL levels all the way down and try again. Problem: Magic users can't obtain the Juggling Lights spell. Solution: Open the gift you start the game with. It will explode in your wizard's face. Click the hand icon (not the eye icon) on the gift wrapping to get the spell. Problem: Your hero can't finish talking to Arne the Aardvark. Solution: Click the talk icon on your hero and say "Goodbye". Problem: Thieves can't cross the chasm. Solution: Click the hand icon on the pillar in from of the chasm first. Question: Where is the Thermonuclear Attack spell? Answer: There is no Thermonuclear Attack spell in QG3. Question: Why does my hero see weird stuff when he's starving in the savanna? Answer: He's starving. Go feed the poor guy. Question: When you click the eye icon on the map, you see the message "You are looking at the 'Tarna and Vicinity' map that came with your 'Famous Explorer's Guide to East Fricana.' ". Where is the map in the guide? Answer: There never was a map in the Famous Explorer's Guide. You won't need one anyway. Problem: You can't use the keyboard to put the game cursor directly on top of something. It jumps over the thing. The mouse works OK. Answer: Hold down the shift key on your keyboard as you press the arrow keys to move the pointer. This will let the pointer move in smaller increments. Quest For Glory 4: Shadows Of Darkness A NOTE ABOUT SAVE GAMES: Games saved while playing under DOS cannot be restored under Windows and vice versa. If you play the game for awhile under DOS or Windows and then decide to switch to the other, you must restart from the beginning. If you do not know which one you prefer, we recommend playing the game under MS-DOS. Question: Dr. Cranium is asking for formulas. Where do you find the formulas? Answer: Look in the QG Anthology documentation on page 30. Question: There is French documentation for QG4 in the \DOCO directory on the QG Anthology CD, but there is no QG4 French game on the CD. Why? Answer: The documentation was printed in French, but we never released a French versionof QG4. We included the French documentation on the CD in case someone needed it. Problem: "Error 47: Not an object: $0 Script 64997/$146" message while trying to slide down the slimy slope near the beginning of the game. Solution: In the QG4 control panel, turn DETAIL all the way down and SPEED all the way up. If that doesn't help, walk the hero in small increments until the computer takes over and slides the hero down to the bottom of the path. Problem: "Error 52: A script is being disposed and there is a cloned object that is still using a class in it". Happens in the swamp while fighting the Chernovy. Solution: Exit the game. From the Quest for Glory 4 directory on your hard drive, run INSTALL and choose IBM PC INTERNAL SPEAKER for MUSIC and NO AUDIO for SPEECH. Save these choices, restart the game, and restore a game before the swamp. From the swamp, go left three screens, then down two screens. Kill the monsters and get out as fast as you can. If this doesn't work, restore a game saved earlier and try again. If it still doesn't work, delete the MS-DOS version, install the Windows version, and play the game in Windows. The error only happens in the MS-DOS version of the game. Be aware that if you want to play the Windows version, you'll have the start the game over from the beginning, since the saved games are not compatible between DOS and Windows. Problem: You can't solve the tentacles puzzle in the Breath room near the end of the game, even after following the ritual instructions to the letter. Solution: Blow on the small BOTTOM tentacles, not the large UPPER tentacles. Problem: You can't summon Erana's staff near the end of the game to break the crystal. The game says "You're too busy right now". Solution #1: In the QG4 control panel, turn DETAIL all the way down and the SPEED all the way up. Try again. Solution #2: This can happen if you're running low on free memory. Make and use a boot disk, then restore a saved game prior to the point where you're stuck. Problem: "DOS/4GW Professional Loader Error" message starting the game. Solution: You are probably running low on available memory. Rerun INSTALL from the \SIERRA\QGANTH\QG4WIN35 or \SIERRA\QGANTH\QG4CD directory on your hard drive and choose MAKE A BOOTABLE FLOPPY DISK. Follow the instructions to make a boot disk to free up more memory to run the game. Problem: "Error 106" when starting the game Solution: You need to load your MS-DOS mouse driver before starting the game. For more information about this, please read the "GENERAL QUESTIONS" section of this README file. Problem: "Unable to allocate 6746358 (or some number) bytes" Solution: You may be running in a Windows MS-DOS shell, or you are probably running low on available memory. Problem: " msgType set to 0 or 579: 13,4,67,1 not found", then "An Internal Game error has occurred...Error number 126.. \list.cpp: 420:64999:43e" while clicking on the Leshy Bush the fourth time you talk to the Leshy (after planting the bonsai tree in Erana's Garden". Solution: Don't click on the Leshy bush. Click on each bush the Leshy bush hides behind. Question: What's the difference between using Arcade / Strategy modes in combat? Answer: Strategy mode means combat is in automatic mode. Arcade mode means you have to do everything. If you click the left mouse button in Strategy mode, you can make your hero more aggressive, use more magic, etc. If you right click, you can enter Arcade mode at any time. If you are in arcade mode, a button with an "S" appears to the right of the combat bar at the bottom of the screen. Clicking on this button puts you in strategy mode. Question: Where is the Whirlwind spell? Answer: There is no Whirlwind spell in QG4. Problem: Magic Users can't cast spells at the Chernovy while gliding in the swamp. The iconbar's magic button is dimmed out. Solution: That's right. You can't. Your magic points are being used for the glide spell. Once you stand on the ground, or those grassy areas in the swamp, the glide spell ends, and you'll be able to magically fight again. Question: Why does a Magic User do an acrobatic flip when you try to "Say Magic Phrase" to the magic bush clocking the way to Baba Yaga's place? Answer: Fighters, Thieves, and Paladins will say the magic phrase to get in. Magic Users will need to cast the Trigger spell to get in. Problem: The thief's dagger throwing and acrobatic attack is not documented in close combat arcade mode. Solution: To throw daggers, right-click on the control panel bar at the bottom of the QG4 screen between the "retreat" button and the strategy mode button. To use the acrobatic attack, left-click and drag the thief onto the monster. The thief's dagger throwing and acrobatics will not work if the monster is too close or if stamina is too low. Problem: "Error 126" message while throwing daggers at the ghosts in the castle hallway. Solution: There is no need to throw daggers at the ghosts. Problem: "Fatal Not an Object:$0 Script 64998/$78f" message while using the fetch spell on the ring in the Guild Hall. Solution: You don't need to "fetch" the ring for any reason. The ring is used by Thieves and Fighter/Paladins for improving climbing skills. Problem: Thieves can't open the safe in the Thieves' Guild. Solution: This isn't a bug. It's a puzzle. Problem: Your Sound Blaster compatible card is on an I/O address other than 220. QG4 doesn't work with it. Solution: Look in the \SBSCI32 directory on the QG Anthology CD. The file "dacblast.drv" is an updated SoundBlaster driver that will recognize sound cards on I/O addresses other than 220. For this driver to work properly, you must have the correct SET BLASTER statement in your autoexec.bat file. For more information on this setting, please refer to your sound card documentation. To install this new driver, copy it to the game directory on your hard drive. For example: COPY D:\SBSCI32\DACBLAST.DRV C:\SIERRA\QGANTH\QG4E35 If this is the talking version of QG4 and you did a small install, you will need to change the RESOURCE.CFG file. Use a text editor to modify the RESOURCE.CFG file in the game directory and add the path to the new driver. For example: Change this: audioDrv = DACBLAST.DRV To This: audioDrv = C:\SIERRA\GKCD\DACBLAST.DRV If you did a medium or large install, all you need to do is copy the new driver into the game directory. Problem: There is no support for your Gravis Ultrasound card in DOS for QG4. Solution: We have provided Gravis Ultrasound drivers that will try to add support our 32-bit DOS Extended game Quest for Glory 4. Full details can be found in the \GRAVIS directory on the QG Anthology CD. These drivers will not work on earlier Sierra games, such as QG1, QG2, and QG3. From DOS, copy the contents of the QGA's \GRAVIS directory into the game dir. Example: COPY D:\GRAVIS\*.* C:\SIERRA\QGANTH\QG4E35 Change to the game directory on your hard drive. MS-DOS users can edit the RESOURCE.CFG file by using the EDIT command. While in the game directory type: EDIT RESOURCE.CFG Edit the RESOURCE.CFG file and change the soundDrv and audioDrv lines to read as follows: soundDrv = GUSMIDI.DRV audioDrv = GUSDAC.DRV SPECIAL NOTE FOR the QG CD "talking" version: If you have installed the game using the tiny installation, you will need to include the full path to the sound driver files, as follows: soundDrv = C:\SIERRA\QG4CD\GUSMIDI.DRV audioDrv = C:\SIERRA\QG4CD\GUSDAC.DRV Save the RESOURCE.CFG file. If you are editing the file with a word processor such as WordPerfect, be sure and save the file as an ASCII file. Before playing a game the LOADPATS.EXE program must be run with the corresponding INI file for the game. For example: C:\> LOADPATS -IQG4.INI The -I[filename] option lets loadpats know which set of patches to load into the Gravis card for the game. The other .INI files on this disk are for the other Sierra 32 bit games: LL6.INI (Leisure Suit Larry 6 CD VESA version) QG4.INI (Quest for Glory 4) PQ4.INI (Police Quest 4) GK1.INI (Gabriel Knight 1 disk and CD) Now start the game according to the instructions in your game manual. Information: Quest for Glory 4 supports the Logitech Cyberman mouse. Here are the controls: - To jump, lift up - To duck, push down - To retreat, bank left - To move forward, bank right - To slash, swing (turn the mouse right) - All normal mouse controls are also supported. These are described on page 41 of the Quest for Glory Anthology manual. Question: In the CD-ROM ("talking") version of QG4, when you speak to the three men in the inn, they don't speak the displayed text word-for-word. Answer: The actors playing the parts of the three townsmen did a lot of hilarious adlibbing. and we decided it was too good not to use. There is one part that's wrong: When Franz first introduces himself. SETTING MONITOR BRIGHTNESS LEVEL in DOS: On some monitors, you may find the video brightness to be a little too dark for your tastes. If this is not due to the brightness control setting on your monitor being set too low, or you do not wish to change this setting, it is possible to change the default brightness setting in the game configuration file. To change this setting, edit the file 'RESOURCE.CFG' in the game directory using any text file editor, such as the DOS EDIT program (just type EDIT at the DOS prompt). Go to the line that says 'brightness = 0', change the 0 to a 1 and save the file to the game directory. If this is still too dark for you, try 2, 3 or even 4 for an extreme increase in brightness. Problem: "BYTES CAN'T BE ALLOCATED" error message in MS-DOS only. Solution: Edit the file 'RESOURCE.CFG' in the game directory using any text file editor, such as the DOS EDIT program (just type EDIT at the DOS prompt). At the end of the file, add the line 'STATICMEMORY = 250K'. The default for this setting is 200K so if 250K doesn't do the trick, increase it again. ISSUES WITH THE AUTOSAVE FEATURE: If the Autosave feature of the game is causing any kind of unusual problems, we recommend that you turn off the Autosave feature in the control panel. Since this is a specialized save of the game, we sometimes have encountered unusual side effects of using this feature. SOUND CARD CONFIGURATION AND SOUND ISSUES MS-DOS and PAS: If you are using a Pro Audio Spectrum 16 or Plus card and experience problems during the game, try running the PAS SETUP software and try selecting a DMA setting of 5. MediaVision has suggested that you may experience better performance at this setting. If you still experience sound problems, re-run the INSTALL utility from the game directory and select "Sound Blaster" as your audio device. Selecting Sound Blaster will utilize the PAS card's built-in Sound Blaster emulation for digitized audio effects. If you are using a Pro Audio Spectrum Plus sound card, you will want to run the 'SB_ON' program before you start QG4. You should do this each time you play the game to ensure that you are getting the best possible sound. DOS Mixer Control, especially for QG4 CD voice: The game's control panel can adjust the volume control in the game. If you need more control, most sound cards' speech and music volume can be controlled separately through software provided by the sound card manufacturer. Here is a list of some common sound cards' mixer volume control commands in MS-DOS. Sound Blaster 16: Type C:\SB16\SB16MIX Vibra 16 in AST Advantage: Type C:\VIBRA16\MIXERSET Sound Galaxy 16 in Packard Bell: Type C:\SOUND16A\UTILITY\MIXTSR or type C:\SOUND144\MIXTSR Ensoniq Soundscape: Type: SSINIT Compaq Presario CDS 524, 920, etc.: If DEVICE=C:\CPQDOS\VOLCTRL.EXE is in CONFIG.SYS on the boot disk, then: Press CTRL-RIGHTSHIFT to increase volume Press CTRL-LEFTSHIFT to decrease volume Proaudio Spectrum Family: Type PAS * to bring up the mixer controls Press CTRL-ALT-U to increase the master volume level Press CTRL-ALT-D to lower the master volume level Sound Blaster 8 bit: No software control. Adjust thumbwheel on card. Thunderboard: No software control. Adjust thumbwheel on back of card. TROUBLESHOOTING HELP A collection of saved games was included on the QG Anthology CD to assist Technical Support in troubleshooting problems in the QG Anthology. These can be found for each QG game in a directory called \SAVES on the game CD. Please note that when saved games are made, it saves the environment, memory setup, heap space, and lots of other tiny but important information. You may or may not be able to use the saved games provided with the CD on your particular computer. However, we've successfully restored and tested these saved games on several computers.
