Stories And More

SAM101P is a patch for Stories and More 1.01. All errors
reported in 1.00 have been corrected in this patch.

The associated package is NOT a complete set of product
diskettes. It consists ONLY of the patches and therefore
must be applied to an existing product in order to be used
         correctly.

         Update information:

Product Name: Stories and More Fix Version: 1.01

Bug Fixes in Version 1.01: ==========================
Creation of package. All errors reported from users have
         been corrected.

         1. Print Screen problems have been fixed.

         2. A 14208 error that occurred when a user exited the
product from Going Beyond in sequential mode, then went
back in to the product, clicked on "OK", then pressed F4 or
             ESC during the speech.

         3. The last student entry in the 'View User List Report'
panel of Teacher Options is now visible.

         4. Due to the improved program features listed below, it is
now impossible to get a 14200 or 60000 error caused by
updating and deleting students from both the ICLAS and
             Stories and More student lists.

         5. If users pressed any keys (especially ESC) many times
rapidly when exiting Stories and More, the system would
             hang. This has been fixed.

         6. The bookmark setting for the last student with an ID less
than five characters in length has been fixed.

         7. Missing dragables in Morris the Moose have been fixed.

         8. When users clicked on MENU from the Library Exit Menu, it
took them to some strange place in the product. The patch
             fixes this problem.

         9. If a user pressed F4 (Menu) during speech in Going
Beyond, the Menu banner would overlay the text window but
the user was still able to type into the text box through
             the Menu banner.

        10. If a user exited out of a Starting Off or Thinking About
activity which included a text entry field and then
reentered the product, a message says "Click on OK to
continue where you left off or press F4 to go to the menu".
If the user pressed F4 a graphics driver error occurred.
This has been fixed. 11. Reporting of partner scoring
information to ICLAS from Stories and More was not working
is the student had a partner. This has been corrected.

        11. An error occurred with the text cursor when users went
into the Mouse Tutorial and ran the activity at least to
the point where they enter their name. If the student
then presses F4 and goes to either Going Beyond or to one
of the "typing" subactivities, the cursor is messed up.
             This has been fixed.

        12. In Going Beyond, a user could press and hold keys down
and fill the entire buffer with no spaces. This long
string was to long for Smooth Talker (44 characters) to
speak. If the user clicked on read the program would
crash. The user can still type in text with no spaces.
The program checks if there are no spaces and adds a break
when it reads and there are no spaces for 44 characters.

        13. If a user repeated an activity multiple times using the
selection at the end of activity screen and then pressed
F4 to go to the menu they would be taken to the beginning
of the activity instead of the menus. This has been
             fixed.

        14. Additional errors that have not been reported by
customers have been found and corrected by the development
team during work on Stories and More Version 1.01.

         Improved Program Features:  ==========================

         1. The time required to process student records when running
as a teacher has been decreased to 1/3 of the former
             processing time.

         2. The student list is automatically coordinated with the
ICLAS student list when running on a network under ICLAS.
Also, the 'Edit User List' menu selection is now disabled
when running Teacher Options on a network.

         3. Various DOS (operating system) and hardware resources are
checked at program start-up to verify that enough of the
particular resources are available. The following areas
             are checked:

Memory: A memory check verifies that there is enough free
memory for the largest activity in Touch Typing before the
program allows the user to access activities. If there is
not enough memory, the user is informed by a warning
             banner.

File Handles: The maximum number of file handles
simultaneously used by Touch Typing is verified at
start-up. If there are not enough file handles, an error
message is posted and the program is terminated.

Video Mode Capability: Video support is checked to insure
that the graphics mode required by Touch Typing is
available. If the video mode is not available, a suitable
error message is posted, and the program is terminated.

         4. Stories and More utilizes extended memory if it is
available to enhance performance by storing all overlayed
code in extended memory. When an overlay occurs the code
is accessed from memory instead of from disk or network.

         5. Option information modified by Teacher Options is written
             to disk only when necessary.

         6. Actions in Teacher Options that take a great deal of time
to complete (writing to disk, etc.) now prevent the user
from clicking the mouse until processing is complete.

         7. The ubiquitous 60000 error is now divided into a range of
errors from 13001-13090. You should note that the last
two digits correspond to the DOS extended error that can
be found in DOS reference manuals.

         8. A number of other commonly occurring errors (14200,
14256, etc.) now report a possible DOS error because many
of these errors are caused at the DOS level.

         9. Modifications have been made in the phrasing of error
messages presented to the user in the event of a program
error. The new wording directs the user to consult
Appendix A of the Stories and More Program's Guide. The
updated Appendix A gives users a series of steps to follow
to correct the problem on their own. The version 1.00
approach was to display a message to 'contact your IBM
representative.' Version 1.01 instructs the user to
contact their IBM representative after having tried the
             prescribed corrective actions.
