Install programs
"Install programs" is the first window that appears when you
start the Software Selections CD.
Use this window to install programs from the Software Selections
CD or from a Software Selections CD
image on your hard disk or on an attached network drive.
Following are the features of the "Install programs" window.
A table displays the programs that are available for installation from
the CD or CD image.
The amount of disk space used by a typical (silent) installation of each
program is shown under the Size heading.
Beside each program, under the Install heading, is a checkbox
that indicates whether you have selected that program for installation;
under the Installed heading is a checkbox that indicates whether
that program is already installed in your computer.
Information about each program is displayed either:
- In a window that appears when you position the mouse over the
program name, or
- Under each program name within the table
You can select between these two options in the
"Change settings" window.
If you have enabled custom installation in the
"Change settings" window, a Custom installation
checkbox is displayed under each program.
A custom installation allows you to specify certain parameters
during the installation process; a typical, or silent,
installation occurs without user input, using default parameters.
If a custom installation is available for a program, the
Custom installation checkbox for that program is
available for selection.
Directly above the table, you can click View by category
to sort the programs by category,
or you can click View by program name
to sort the programs alphabetically.
The pie chart at the bottom of the "Install programs"
window indicates the amount of used and free space on each of your
hard disks.
Selecting a disk in this function does not affect where any
program will be installed.
To install programs:
- Click Install programs from the menu in the left panel.
(If the Software Selections CD is not in the CD-ROM drive, you are
prompted to insert the CD into the CD-ROM
drive or specify a hard disk
or attached network drive where a Software Selections CD image
is located.)
The table of programs that are available for installation is displayed.
- For each program that you want to install, click to select the
checkbox under the Install heading.
If a custom installation is available for that program and you want to
use it, click to select the Custom installation checkbox.
- When all the programs you want to install are selected (checked),
click Install, and follow the on-screen instructions.
The programs for which you selected typical installations are installed
first.
Then the programs for which you are using custom installations are
installed, and you are prompted for input to complete these installations.
To exit from the Software Selections CD, click Exit.
