5160ROMS  Tool

This page applicable to version 1.3

Requirements

An IBM 5160 motherboard:
- fitted with IBM BIOS ROM's; and
- functional enough to boot to DOS (so that 5160ROMS.EXE can be executed).

Description

5160ROMS.EXE is a DOS program that is used on an IBM 5160 (IBM XT).

It calculates the CRC of the ROM in motherboard socket U18 and the CRC of the ROM in motherboard socket U19, and then displays:
- The calculated CRC of U18.
- The calculated CRC of U19.
- Based on the calculated CRC of U18, which IBM 5160 BIOS chip is fitted in the U18 socket.
- Based on the calculated CRC of U19, which IBM 5160 BIOS chip is fitted in the U19 socket.

An example screen shot is at here.   ( Everything as expected for a 11/08/82 dated ROM set. )

5160ROMS.EXE also looks for certain problems, listed below in the 'Problems reported on' section.  The example screen shot at here shows an example of the wrong chip in socket U19.

Note: If third-party ROM's are fitted, the CRC's of the U18+U19 ROM's will be shown, but the U18+U19 ROM's will not be identified.
5160ROMS.EXE only identifies IBM authored BIOS ROM chips for the IBM 5160.

Limited use

I acknowledge that 5160ROMS.EXE has very limited use.

Problems reported on

Report if U18 is not identified as an IBM authored BIOS ROM chip for the IBM 5160.

Report if U18 and U19 are identical.

Report mixed versions.  For example, U18 is dated 11/08/82, and U19 is dated 01/10/86.

Report if socket U19 contains a BIOS expansion ROM.

Report if there is an IBM 5160 BIOS ROM in socket U18, but U19 cannot be identified.
