Question: Why do I get the message that the Com Port is already open in Modem Diagnostics?
Answer: There are a few occurrences that could cause this: 1) your computer needs to be rebooted; 2) there are too many controllers loaded; 3) the modem is being used by another application; 4) the modem needs to be reinstalled; 5) the modem has been installed twice; 6) an infrared port is using the same resources as the modem.
1. Reboot your computer.
2. To see if there are too many controllers installed, go to Control Panel | System | Device Manager tab. Open PCMCIA resources. In Windows 95 A, there should only be one controller listed. Newer laptops have card bus controllers so you will see 2 card bus controllers and perhaps PCMCIA Card Services. If your computer has more than the described controllers, remove all controllers and reboot your computer. See if the modem will now communicate in Modem | Diagnostics.
3. To determine if the modem is being used by another application, hit the Cntl Alt Del keys to bring up the Close Program window. This will show you what applications are currently open.
4. To reinstall your TDK modem, go to Control Panel | System | Device Manager tab. Click on the plus sign next to Modem. Highlight your TDK modem and click the Remove button. Close Device Manager. Take the modem out of your laptop and put it back in again. You should get a New Hardware Found message.
5. To see if modem is installed twice, go to Control Panel | System | Device Manager tab. Click on the plus sign next to Modem. If your modem is listed twice, highlight and remove both listings. Close Device Manager. Take the modem out of your laptop and put it back in again. You should get a New Hardware Found message.
6. To disable infrared ports, go to Control Panel | System | Device Manager tab. Click on the plus sign next to Ports. Disable infrared port(s) by double clicking on each one, check "Disable in this hardware profile" box.
