Question: Why can't I connect at greater than 28800 with my modem?

Answer: There are four major items that dictate your connect speed:

1. The top speed of your modem.

2. The top speed of the modem at the remote end (the modem you are connecting to).

3. Line conditions - how much noise is detected on the line (signal to noise ratio) during the modem connection process. The more noise that is detected, the slower the modems must transmit in order to insure accurate data transfer.

4. You are dialing out through a PBX. Generally, if you have to dial a 9 to get an outside line, you are going through a PBX.

To check your line quality and actual connect and receive rates, get into a terminal application such as HyperTerminal. Type at&f [enter]. Type atdt[ISP phone number][enter]. Once you are connected to your ISP, type +++ [enter]. After getting a response of OK, type at&v1. The lower the phone line quality number, the better the phone line. If your phone line quality is below 20, you should be getting good connect rates. If it is above 30, you are not going to get high connect rates.
